Job Summary

The Team
The Nanaimo Youth Services team is an established group of approximately 11 social workers, led by a team leader, providing essential support and child safety services to youth aged 12-19 in the Nanaimo and Ladysmith areas. This team works closely with child protection and collaborative practice workers, supporting other Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) teams when needed. The team is dedicated to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for youth and their families.

The Role
As a Social Worker Assistant, you will provide crucial support by helping parents and youth access community-based programs, assessing their needs, and ensuring they are matched with suitable resources. You will assist youth-in-care (YIC) and service providers by arranging services, preparing necessary documents, and ensuring payments are made to caregivers. Your responsibilities will also include helping with child abuse and neglect investigations, gathering information for Care Plans, and serving court notices to parents. Additionally, you will play an active role in case management, attending multi-disciplinary meetings, documenting case points, and transporting children and youth to appointments and other activities. Collaborating closely with other SPO Assistants, you will ensure comprehensive support for social workers and the youth they serve.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Secondary School Graduation or Equivalent AND one of the following:
    • Two (2) years of post-secondary studies towards a degree, diploma or certificate in a related human services field or equivalent discipline (Human Services fields or equivalent include Social Work, Child & Youth Care, Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Anthropology, Early Childhood Education, Indigenous Studies, Education, Theology and Nursing) PLUS a minimum of one (1) year or more of related** work experience.
    • OR
    • One (1) year of post-secondary studies towards a degree, diploma or certificate in a related human services field or equivalent discipline (Human Services fields or equivalent include Social Work, Child & Youth Care, Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Anthropology, Early Childhood Education, Indigenous Studies, Education, Theology and Nursing) PLUS a minimum of two (2) years or more of related** work experience.
    • OR
    • Minimum of three (3) years or more of related** work experience.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Related work experience may include:
    • Working with children, youth, families or adults in any one or a combination of the following settings and may also include administrative work in these settings:
      • A child and family service agency that provides legislated services (child protection, guardianship, resources, family support or adoption);
      • A social services agency on an Indigenous reserve, providing direct support services;
      • A family services agency that provides assessment and counselling services;
      • A contracted agency providing assessment, counselling and family support services;
      • A specialized care setting for vulnerable adults, children, or youth that also involves direct work with families;
      • A policing, probation or corrections setting;
      • A mental health or healthcare setting providing assessment and counselling services;
      • An education setting undertaking assessment and counselling services;
      • A social services agency providing services to people with diverse abilities and vulnerable adults;
      • A provincial agency dedicated to promoting safe and healthy workplaces providing services and support for injured workers.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Class 5 BC Driver's License.

Preference May be Given to
  • Applicants who have experience using the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) Integrated Case Management (ICM) and/or Management Information Systems (MIS) computer systems.
  • Applicants who self-identify as First Nations, Métis or Inuit with the required combination of education and experience.

Willingness Statements
  • Travel, as necessary, is a requirement; therefore, transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the Ministry.
  • May be required to travel in adverse (reasonable) weather conditions.
  • May be required to use your own vehicle, with appropriate insurance, on an expense account basis.
  • This position may require irregular work hours, including some evenings and weekends.
