About the Team:

The Nicola Private Debt Fund (the “Fund”) combines corporate direct lending, co-investing and fund investing to target an attractive premium above public market fixed income yields and returns.

The Fund invests in a variety of North American private debt strategies across the risk spectrum including US mid-market direct lending, Canadian mid-market direct lending, US broadly syndicated loans, special situations, credit secondaries, and opportunistic credit among others. Our growing direct lending mandate is focused on lending to mature and profitable mid-market companies that require secured senior or junior debt financing for growth, acquisitions, or ownership transition. Typical hold size for a direct loan or co-investment in the Fund ranges between $10 and $40 million.

As of June 30, 2024, the Fund’s net assets under management reached $1.3 billion. The Nicola Private Debt Fund is part of the Nicola Private Capital Group which manages over $4.0 billion of assets across Private Debt, Private Equity, Infrastructure and Commercial Mortgages. Nicola Wealth as a firm manages $16.1 billion of assets across public and private markets on behalf of its clients.

Purpose of the Role:

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a commitment to excellence and experience in financial analysis, due diligence and corporate lending to join our growing private debt team.

Reporting to the Principal, Private Debt, the Analyst will play a key role in investing and monitoring the Nicola Private Debt Fund to generate strong investment returns for Nicola Wealth clients. The Analyst will support the investment team with the assessment, analysis, due diligence, execution and monitoring of new co-investments, direct loans and fund investments.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Monitoring the performance of existing debt investments in the portfolio.
  • Evaluating and screening new debt investment opportunities as part of the investment team.
  • Conducting due diligence on potential debt investments as part of the investment team, including:
    • Financial statement review.
    • Borrower, industry, structure and portfolio risk analysis.
    • Detailed financial model preparation, review and analysis.
  • Preparing pitch decks for new direct loan opportunities.
  • Preparing investment memos for the investment committee.
  • Preparing other presentations to internal stakeholders.
  • Identifying and managing operational risks and improving processes.
  • Assisting with other ad-hoc projects within the Private Capital team.
  • Actively engaging in ongoing learning and development to continuously improve skills and knowledge.
  • Other relevant and related responsibilities, as assigned and as the needs of the organization change.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • 1-2 years of corporate credit experience at a financial institution or private debt fund
  • Undergraduate degree in business/accounting/finance
  • Proven credit due diligence, underwriting and financial modeling skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Highly curious, fast learner, with a demonstrated personal interest in Asset Management
  • Collaborative and team focused, with the ability to excel within a team environment
  • Strong mathematical ability and excellent analytical skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Strong MS Office skills (in particular, Excel and PowerPoint)
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
  • Experience in leveraged finance, corporate banking, mid-market commercial lending, mezzanine lending, or credit risk management is considered an asset
  • Experience monitoring a credit portfolio is considered an asset
  • A professional demeanor with the ability to build trust with our people and partners
  • Well-developed organizational and time management skills
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada for any employer
Compensation & Benefits Package:

This position comes with a base salary range of $70,000 - $100,000 plus a competitive performance bonus, RRSP contribution and participation in our profit-sharing program. Base salary will be commensurate with experience, skills, and qualifications.
