JOB DESCRIPTION: YOUTH AND/OR CHILD WORKER
The Adult, Youth and/or Child Worker is accountable to the Program Manager

JOB SUMMARY:
Assists children and youth develop life skills, social skills and/or access to community resources. Provides individual care and guidance consistent with the needs of an individual with mental health issues, behavioural challenges, developmental disability, or addictions. Provides stabilization through predictable structures, clear expectations and positive behaviour support. Incumbents must have the ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team context, and be able to demonstrate skills in basic counselling, crisis intervention, conflict resolution and problem solving, as well as written and verbal communication skills.Key Duties/Responsibilities:
- Gathers information relevant to the individual’s problems, needs and risks by interviewing, observing behaviour, meeting with caregivers and service providers and using a variety of inventories, checklists and questionnaires. Reviews the information gathered to identify problems, needs and risks.
- Develops and implements short-term, issue-specific intervention plans within program guidelines in consultation with the supervisor.
- Plans, prepares and conducts group or individual support sessions using techniques such as active listening, conflict resolution, basic group counselling, and basic psycho-educational group methods to resolve the identified problems, needs and risks.
- Provides skill building in areas such as parenting skills, anger management or self-management techniques.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of the intervention plan, reports on individuals’ progress, and discusses related concerns with the supervisor in order to resolve identified problems and move towards defined objectives.
- Outlines services provided by the program and/or organization. Provides information on and referral to other community service providers, resources and professionals as required.
- Maintains related records and statistics and provides reports to the supervisor as required.
- Liaises with and/or promotes the interests of individuals with other community service providers, professionals and school personnel as required. Accompanies individuals to meetings and appointments as required.
- Performs other related duties as required such as, but not limited to, minor repairs of the home, lawn mowing, painting, and other such regular household activities needed for the daily upkeep and maintenance of the home.
- Ensures that individuals’ physical needs are met by performing duties such as assisting with basic personal hygiene, preparing meals, and administering medication as required in accordance with established guidelines, procedures and instructions.
- Contribute to team effectiveness through clear and direct communication and participation in staff meetings.
- Is familiar with (through regular review) Milieu Children & Family Services policies, procedures, individual protocols and care plans.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- A diploma in human/ social services or a related discipline or an acceptable combination of education and experience.
- A minimum of two-year experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities and/or physical/medical/behavioral support needs or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Knowledgeable of and encourages each person served to develop and expand his/her methods of communication
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate relationships and connections wherein persons served expand their personal support networks and find new and meaningful relationships.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Outlook
- Negative T.B test Clearance
- Food Safe Certification where required
- Criminal Record Check for Children and Vulnerable Adults (Provincial) - Clearance
- MCFD Criminal Record Check - Youth
- Clear Health Certificate
- Able to lift a minimum of 5 lbs.
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification
- Class 5 (Where required class 4 unrestricted driver’s license) ( If applicable in the location and/or house you are working you will need a vehicle, business insurance and 3 million liability)
- Clear and Current Driver’s Abstract.
- Mandt Certification (Available training upon successful application)
