Job Summary
The Team
The Fort Nelson Zone team at BC Wildfire Service is an established group of 25 staff, including 4 permanent year-round positions. You'll work in a collaborative environment alongside staff from prevention, operations, corporate wildfire administration team, and local partners like the oil and gas industry, First Nations, and forestry operations. Known for its friendly atmosphere, the team offers great mentorship and opportunities for career growth. By joining, you'll have a direct impact on wildfire operations and contribute to local risk reduction and community safety.
The Role
As a Wildfire Technician, you'll supervise crews, manage an assigned portfolio such as training or prescribed fire, and ensure year-round preparedness and response. Your work plays a crucial role in natural disaster mitigation, primarily fire suppression, directly impacting community safety. This position offers the chance to lead in emergency situations and make a meaningful difference for others.

Fort Nelson: Originally built around the bustling Alaska Highway, Fort Nelson has been awarded special designation as a wilderness management vicinity. Hiking, fishing, camping, wildlife viewing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling are all popular. Visiting Liard River Hotsprings Provincial Park allows a unique experience for visitors and community members alike.
This position has full time on-site requirements.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Degree in a field related to forestry, resource management or equivalent knowledge, plus 1 year recent *related experience; or
- Technical diploma in a field related to forestry, resource management, or equivalent knowledge, plus 3 years *recent related experience; or
- Grade 12 plus 5 years *related experience or an equivalent combination of education and training;
- *Relatedexperiencemustinclude:Experienceinwildfire operationsorother disciplines related to forestry or natural resource management.
- Minimum 2 years supervisory experience.
- Preference may be given to candidates with Incident Commander 4 or higher.
- Valid class 5 B.C. driver licence or equivalent.
Willingness Statements:
- To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments and corporate structures.
- To keep current on emerging issues.
- To take in-house training and certification as required.
- To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
- To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
- To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
- To participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned.
- To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions.
- To obtain and maintain certification and training for position to meet operational requirements.
