This on-call position is available starting November 12, 2024. Hours of work are generally between the hours of 8:00am - 5:30pm, Monday to Friday. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required. Scheduled hours range between 4 hours to 7 hours per day depending on the assignment. The position is located at the New Westminster/Coquitlam campuses.

The Role
To provide laboratory instruction, supervision and evaluation of students in the Biology Laboratory including preparation of materials for use in the laboratory, subject to the curricula approval of the Biology Faculty. Provides exceptional client-centred service on a consistent basis to all stakeholder groups.
Responsibilities
1. Provides laboratory instruction and demonstration related to college Biology courses, subject to the curricula approval of the Biology Faculty.
a. instructs students with respect to the laboratory component of Biology courses and assists students with difficulties related to the lecture component of courses;
b. demonstrates lab tasks and the correct use of equipment in the laboratory;
c. instructs students with respect to lab theory, protocols and safety;
d. supervises students in the laboratory, ensuring compliance with safety procedures including using equipment that can inflict serious injury if misused;
e. develops and implements strategies to facilitate student learning and provides introductory presentations on weekly labs when required.
2. Evaluates student work and performance in relation to laboratory requirements.
a. evaluates written work submitted by students as well as the performance of students in the laboratory in relation to laboratory requirements;
b. assesses and assigns final laboratory grades;
c. provides additional assistance to students, outside of regularly scheduled laboratory times, in relation to lab work;
d. assists faculty with invigilating final lecture exams, when required;
e. sets, invigilates and evaluates laboratory exams;
f. evaluates results of students in labs (including 2nd and 3rd year-level) with respect to techniques carried out.
3. Prepares materials for use in the laboratory, subject to the curricula approval of the Biology Faculty, including using computer applications.
a. keeps current with new technologies such as video editing software, Microsoft sharing apps, Zoom as well as software and technologies specific to lab equipment, new research, equipment and techniques relevant to existing and potential new Biology labs;
b. assesses new information and determines its relative value in relation to facilitating student learning in the laboratory;
c. researches and recommends appropriate technology for teaching in the Biology labs;
d. sets and evaluates laboratory materials and exams, including creation of questions for Blackboard;
e. creates and edits PowerPoints to use as a teaching aid during the start of each lab;
f. creates and/or initiates the development of supplementary instructional materials such as posters, instructional videos, information sheets, etc.;
g. films, narrates and edits lab-related videos on lab techniques or summaries for posting to Blackboard;
h. maintains and updates lab Blackboard pages with lab-related web links, files, self-created videos, lab reports, review materials and groups;
i. researches, designs and writes experiments for student use with labs increasing in complexity in 2nd and 3rd year courses;
j. cares for laboratory animals in compliance with Canadian Council of Animal Care accreditation requirements;
k. cares for plants in the Greenhouse as well as some outside areas;
l. orders lab materials and ensures they are ready and available for student labs/use;
m. assesses equipment needs for new labs, sources equipment, obtains quotes and submits to Lab Supervisor for capital requests;
n. provides subject matter expertise on new equipment by writing Biology Lab SOP's for procedures and operational instructions of technical lab equipment to be shared with the department.
4. Supports the safety of all users of the Biology Labs.
a. demonstrates proper and safe use of dangerous/fragile lab equipment;
b. provides lab-specific orientation to new hires (staff and student assistants) when Lab Supervisor not available;
c. maintains records and assures compliance with Public Health Agency of Canada guidelines for Biosafety in Level 2 laboratories; completes training required by Biosafety Manual and PHAC ;
d. responsible for maintaining safety of students, faculty and staff when using human pathogens and for the security of said pathogens;
e. enforces safety rules, proper use and destruction of human pathogens by maintaining inventory lists and kill records (including when used in Faculty Research);
f. maintains up-to-date inventory of all chemicals found within the Biology labs;
g. complies with, and enforces, SDS & GHS requirements for use, storage and disposal of chemicals; maintains up-to-date SDS for all chemicals;
h. maintains and safely handles specimens and chemicals stored in cryovials within liquid nitrogen while ensuring the security of stored samples.
5. Performs other duties as assigned.
a. supervises student assistants in safe operation of tasks as well as directing new staff members in tasks;
b. maintains records of Biology Lab grades;
c. creates, maintains and updates sign-in/attendance sheets;
d. sets up laboratory equipment and demonstrations and ensures equipment is in good working order;
e. troubleshoots problems with lab equipment and carries out repairs if possible;
f. maintains contact with students through email and Blackboard announcements;
g. performs Laboratory Technician duties as required.

To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need
•A B.Sc. in Biology from a recognized post-secondary educational institution. Specialization in a particular field of Biology may be required.
•Public Speaking ability
•Excellent working knowledge of the operation and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and apparatus together with good working knowledge of safety measures related to the operation of the Biology laboratory, including GHS ( WHMIS ).
•Good working knowledge of English (written and verbal).
•A demonstrated ability to:
•communicate courteously and effectively in person, in writing and over the telephone with students, faculty, administrators, staff, and the public.
•work independently with minimum direct supervision.
•establish priorities and achieve deadlines.
•effectively demonstrate proper laboratory techniques.
•maintain current knowledge in the field of biology.
