$118,575.61 - $153,583.53 annually, plus $37.64 bi-weekly isolation allowance for Smithers; $54.75 bi-weekly Isolation allowance for Fort Nelson; $44.49 bi-weekly isolation allowance for Prince Rupert.

Job Summary

The Team
The BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) plays a crucial role in protecting society by independently, effectively, and fairly conducting prosecutions and appeals at all levels of court. With a dedicated team of approximately 550 Crown Counsel across British Columbia, we are organized into five regions: North, Interior, Fraser, Vancouver, and Vancouver Island-Powell River. Additionally, we have specialized criminal appeals and special prosecutions offices in Vancouver and Victoria, with our provincial headquarters located in Victoria.

The Role
Reporting to Administrative Crown Counsel, you will be responsible for independently, effectively, and fairly pre-approving charges and prosecuting offences under the Criminal Code, provincial statutes and regulations, and federal statutes. Crown Counsel in BC are responsible for deciding whether to lay charges and which charges to lay. They conduct cases in court through to their conclusion in accordance with BCPS policies and the Crown Counsel Act.

Qualifications:

• Membership in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia, or eligible to become a practicing member of the Law Society of British Columbia within 90 days of the closing of the competition.
• Crown Counsel Level 1: Counsel up to 5th year of call, preferably in the practice of Criminal Law and/or prosecution.
• Significant trial experience.

Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:

• Lawyers with recent (within the last 3 years) and significant criminal trial experience.
• Lawyers with criminal prosecution experience.

Provisos:

• Travel is a requirement of this position.

Note: Lawyers with an excess of five (5) years of call to the bar will not be considered.

About this Position:
Currently there is one (1) full time permanent opportunity available.
This position may be based in any of the following Crown Counsel offices: Dawson Creek, Fort Nelson, Fort St. John, Prince George, Prince Rupert, Quesnel, Smithers, Terrace, Vanderhoof and Williams Lake.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
A Criminal Record Review Act Check (CRRA) and Enhanced Security Screening will be required.
This position is included in the Crown Counsel Association. Under the Public Service Labour Relations Act, this position is excluded from union membership.
