Overview

The Business, Security and End-User Services (BSES) department of WorkSafeBC is looking for one highly motivated, dynamic, innovative Co-op student, Cybersecurity Automation Engineer to join our team to help us strive towards our vision.

The BSES department provides an exceptional technology experience for our organization by meeting end-user expectations for technology education and support, offering best-in-class Cybersecurity, and ensuring transparent and accountable decision-making through governance practices and policies. This is a eight-month temporary opportunity starting in January 2025.

Where you'll work

At WorkSafeBC, we offer a hybrid work model that combines the convenience of working remotely with the dynamism of working in one of our offices, based on the operational needs of the position.

In this role, you'll work primarily from your B.C. home and be on-site roughly once per month in our Richmond office.

What you'll do

On Day 1 in this role, you will get a chance to meet your manager and get acquainted with your team. You will spend time setting up administrative and technological essentials, and completing onboarding tasks, including security and payroll setup.

During your first week you will engage in a comprehensive onboarding program as well as partner with a work buddy to equip you for success. You will be partnering and meeting with your manager to discuss your goals and align them with the team's vision. Additionally, you will learn how our department contributes to the overall business strategy and supports the organization's mandate. You will also work through different safety and security courses as part of the WorkSafeBC e-learning modules.
  • Assist with automating the integration of security tools into DevOps CI/CD (continuous integration and continuous deployment) pipelines,
  • Work on Powershell scripting to automate the actions required for common findings from security tools,
  • Assist the senior engineers with testing PowerShell scripts for various scenarios,
  • Assist the senior engineers in implementation of security tools i.e. code scanning, security configuration scanning.

Is this a good fit for you?

We're looking for someone who can:
  • Script in PowerShell
  • Working knowledge of Azure DevOps pipelines or any other similar CI/CD pipelines
  • Implement, direct and enforce logical security
  • Monitor the existing information systems environment for possible security exposures; ensuring identified exposures are kept as confidential as possible; act upon problem, evaluating risk and identifying potential impact and determining an appropriate course of action
  • Participate in research and evaluations of logical and physical security products and procedures
  • Contribute to a positive work environment by collaborating and working effectively as a member of the team
  • Think critically while also having fun working through complex problems

Your background and experience
  • Currently a 3rd or 4th year student enrolled in a computer science, cybersecurity or related program,
  • Previous coding and scripting experience is an asset.
  • Previous co-op or relevant work experience in an office environment is preferred,
  • Microsoft 365 applications and Microsoft Azure experience is an asset.
