About the Opportunity

RDN has exciting opportunity for a permanent full-time Chief Millwright, primarily based in Nanaimo, BC, and supporting both the northern and southern communities of the RDN.

Reporting to the Superintendent, Wastewater Maintenance, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the effective operation of the wastewater treatment facilities by leading maintenance efforts and overseeing both the administrative and mechanical operations.

In this position, you will be primarily responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of wastewater treatment facilities, pump stations, and environmental protection infrastructure. Your role will also involve supporting the Wastewater department by providing leadership and direction to team members, guiding them to meet service expectations and departmental goals.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Supporting safety culture by promoting and adhering to workplace health and safety regulations
  • Leading and supervising Millwrights, coordinating maintenance work to minimize downtime
  • Developing and implementing preventative maintenance procedures, workflows, and safe work practices
  • Managing project planning, operating budgets, and purchasing tools and parts
  • Identifying issues proactively, creating work orders, and organizing resources 
  • Overseeing the maintenance of spare parts, equipment, and lubricants inventory
  • Collaborating with operators and tradespeople for equipment isolation and reactivation after maintenance
  • Actively performing installation, maintenance, repair, and alignment of all machinery and equipment, working alongside the team on hands-on tasks
  • Providing hands-on instruction and mentorship to Millwrights, Operators, and Contractors, ensuring adherence to proper maintenance procedures and supporting skill development
  • Traveling occasionally across the northern and southern communities with provided vehicles to support maintenance operations across sites

About You

To qualify, you will need an interprovincial Red Seal Millwright certification, with 5+ years of related experience in wastewater treatment or relevant industries such as municipal water and wastewater, oil and gas, pulp and paper, or mill and mining operations, and 1+ year of supervisory experienceAn equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

The following are also required:

  • Must have a valid Driver’s License 
  • Ability to undergo a criminal record check 

The following skills and experience will be strong assets:

  • Proven knowledge of mechanical equipment, piping, valves, machinery, and controls
  • Expertise in metal fabrication, including welding and working with steel and aluminum for small parts, fittings, and piping
  • Strong understanding of WorkSafeBC Occupational Health and Safety and WHMIS regulations and procedures
  • Leadership in fostering a safety culture and ensuring adherence to safe work practices
  • Experience in preventative maintenance and the development of standard operating procedures
  • Proficiency in using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) for work orders and equipment history management
  • Demonstrated ability to perform precise machine work, including alignment using tools such as dial gauges and laser alignment devices
  • Hold an Occupational First Aid Level 1 certificate (asset)
  • Strong interpersonal and team-building skills to promote collaboration and efficiency
  • Excellent time management with the ability to work independently under minimal supervision
