Job Summary

The Team
As part of the Aquatic Invasive Fauna Unit, you'll join an established, close-knit team dedicated to addressing the threat of aquatic invasive fauna to British Columbia's freshwater ecosystems and native species. Our diverse team, comprising a Unit Head, an Aquatic Invasive Fauna Specialist, and a Data Analyst and Visualization Specialist-collaborates closely with numerous internal and external partners to make a meaningful impact.

The Role
The Project Biologist coordinates a diverse team in the field to protect BC's natural habitats, particularly at Cultus Lake, by managing invasive species and helping safeguard species at risk. You'll coordinate with multiple partners, ranging from federal and provincial organizations to Indigenous groups and non-profits, while curating and analyzing data to drive informed conservation efforts. This role offers a blend of hands-on fieldwork, community engagement, and professional growth, with ample opportunities to innovate and explore new strategies for ecosystem protection.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a related science field (e.g. biological sciences, ecology, natural resources management or related discipline) and minimum of two (2) years of related experience.
  • Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in B.C. with the College of Applied Biology (CAB) or eligible to be registered within six (6) months of employment.
    *Note: Immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a Professional Biologist (RP Bio) with the College of Applied Biology within 6 months of appointment.
  • Valid class 5 B.C. driver's licence.

Related Experience must include the following:
  • Experience working in aquatic field-based environments.
  • Experience managing and coordinating projects.
  • Experience communicating effectively with diverse groups of partners and stakeholders.
  • Experience in data management, synthesis and reporting.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
  • Experience working with aquatic invasive species.
  • Backpack electrofishing certification.
  • Boat electrofishing certification.

Provisos
  • Meet safety standards of Work Safe BC.
  • May require the operation of a variety of equipment.
  • Conducts field work which may include the following: travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to carry equipment and supplies in difficult terrain.
