About the Opportunity

RDN has exciting opportunities for full-time Wastewater Operator roles, based at the French Creek Pollution Control Centre on Vancouver Island, BC.

This role primarily focuses on ensuring the effective operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment and collection facilities, reporting directly to the Chief Operator - Wastewater, and supporting the team to meet service expectations and departmental goals.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Reviewing, adhering to, and promoting adherence to safe work procedures
  • Inspecting systems for proper operation and addressing abnormal conditions
  • Maintaining operational and maintenance records and logbooks
  • Assisting in pump station operation and maintenance
  • Performing plant process operational adjustments as directed
  • Assisting in the maintenance and operations of sludge dewatering equipment and polymer systems
  • Performing routine emergency systems tests
  • Assisting in monitoring and maintenance of force mains, trunk sewers, and pump stations

If you join us as a Wastewater Operator II/III, your responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Directing and supporting junior staff and trainees in their duties and development
  • Performing advanced operational adjustments and maintenance on treatment and dewatering equipment
  • Coordinating and responding to emergency call-outs as part of rotational on-call duties
  • Contributing to the development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures and safety protocols

More About You

To qualify, you will need a post-secondary diploma in Water and Wastewater Technology with an Environmental Operators Certification Program Class 1-3 Certificate in Wastewater TreatmentIndividuals with a current EOCP Operator in Training certificate or equivalent training in related industries, such as Industrial Wastewater Treatment or Pulp & Paper Operations, with transferable skills and wastewater experience, are encouraged to apply.

The following are also required:

  • Possession of a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License or equivalent
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in a Class II or higher facility
  • Ability to work weekend shifts on a rotational basis as required
  • Ability to undergo a Criminal Record Check
  • Flexibility to respond to callouts on evenings and weekends, with the expectation to reside within 30 minutes of the facility for on-call response reliability

The following skills and experience will be strong attributes:

  • Working knowledge of WHMIS regulations and procedures
  • Basic laboratory, electrical instrumentation, pipe fitting, welding, and computer skills
  • Proven knowledge of Transportation of Dangerous Goods
  • WSBC approved OFA Level 1 First Aid course
  • Competent in Hazardous Energy Isolation and Lockout/Tagout (asset)
  • Knowledge of overhead crane operation and hoisting/rigging practices (asset)
  • Ability to work independently following safe work procedures, and practice
