Day One Society (Phoenix Centre) provides substance use services and advocacy for individuals, families and communities. We have a 20-bed inpatient detox unit, outpatient youth counselling, youth day treatment and supportive recovery programs.

Registered Nurse and Registered Psychiatric Nurse - permanent Fulltime, Part Time and Casual positions available

Wage: As per Nurses Bargaining Association Agreement
Hours of Work: 12 hour shifts (day and night)
Length of Position: Permanent Fulltime, Part Time or casual
Start Date: As soon as possible
Reporting to: Detox Supervisor
Job Summary:
Reporting to the Detox Supervisor the Detox Nurse provides nursing care and support to clients with potential psychological, emotional, behavioural, and medical problems who are withdrawing from substances. This position requires flexibility and responsiveness in a stressful environment, often dealing with clients in crisis situations. Managing emergency situations is an ongoing expectation of this position. The position also provides education to clients and consultation to staff as required. The hours of work for this position are 0730 - 1930 and 1930 to 0730 temporary fulltime and part of a master rotation (2 days/2 nights). Casual positions are also available.The position requires a moderate level of physical fitness to effectively carry out the duties of this position.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Nursing Care
- Completes a full mental and physical health assessment of the client upon arrival and then on an ongoing basis as required
- Provides support and resources to clients and families about health care, harm reduction and other addiction education and treatment options
- Provides health/mental health instruction and education to all residential staff (in all residential settings) including orientating staff to the approved administration of oral and topical medications and information of medication
- Discusses mental health plans, and evaluates medical care and therapies of clients with psychiatrist, physician, professional therapists, social workers, and other professionals
- Develops positive relationships with program clients and provides warm, nurturing and therapeutic environment in which to explore responsible choices and options
- Discusses mental health plans and evaluates medical care and therapies of clients with psychiatrist, physician, professional therapists, social workers and other professionals
- Provides wound care, diabetes monitoring and care and other medical support as required and within the scope of practice of an RN
- Assists the attending physician as needed; processes physician orders and consults with physicians by telephone as needed
- Provides and/or assists with medical or environmental emergencies consistent with legislative parameters and approved organization policies
- Administers medication according to medication schedules and protocols
- Manages behaviour of clients in a professional and therapeutic manner
- Maintains a clean and healthy residential environment
- Follows internal safety and emergency procedures
- Consults regularly with the Detox Supervisor and/or designate to discuss medical, emotional and referral needs of clients and progress
- Performs nursing care to clients including the administration of prescribed medication/treatment and observing, recording, and reporting symptoms and changes in client’s condition
- Works co-operatively with colleagues and community professionals and acts as a positive role model at all time
- Maintains accurate and timely written reports and records for each assigned program client as per BCCNM guidelines
- Documents significant occurrences and information related to clients
- Participates in program evaluation by collecting and compiling data and making modifications to service to reflect evaluation findings
- Provides culturally competent services through recognition of the similarities and differences in values, norms and customs of persons served that vary by ethnicity, gender, religion and sexual orientation
- Participates positively and productively as a member of the program team
- Actively supports and works within the goals, policies, and procedures of the program and Society
- Represents the program and agency to participants, involved professionals, funders, and the community in a positive and professional manner
- Participates in meetings with Detox Supervisor, physicians, pharmacist and detox staff as required
- Performs other related duties as required
Education
- Registered Nurse
- Current registration as an RN with the BC College of Nurses & Midwives
- CPR and Level 1 First Aid Certificate
- At least 2 years’ experience in nursing substance affected individuals and/or individuals with mental health issues and/or equivalency
- Experience working with the harm reduction model is an asset
- Experience with electronic medical records will be an asset
- Knowledge of pathophysiology related to substance abuse
- Knowledge of mental health issues as they related to substance abuse
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, client family members, co-workers and people in the community both individually and in groups
- Demonstrated a respectful, empathetic, non-judgmental attitude to clients and colleagues
- Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision on a multi-disciplinary team
- Proven ability to organize and prioritize
