In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority resident safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. The Cook prepares assigned food items by methods/procedures such as roasting, frying, grilling, steaming, poaching, boiling and baking under the direction of the Shift Supervisor. Provides work direction to food services workers, residents and/or volunteers.

What you'll do
  • Prepares and serves meals and snacks in accordance with established menus and recipes, by performing duties such as planning food preparation and cooking schedules, cooking, roasting, grilling, baking, testing for palatability, and carving. Modifies and adjusts established menus as required.
  • Maintains established food rotations in storage in order to minimize spoilage and waste.
  • Checks and records food and fridge temperatures by inserting thermometer in edibles and reading fridge thermometers. Advises supervisor of discrepancies arising from the actual versus required food and beverage temperatures.
  • Cleans items such as dishes, pots, pans and utensils by methods such as washing and scrubbing; loading, unloading and operating dishwasher.
  • Keeps equipment and cooking areas clean such as stoves, tables and countertops.
  • Monitors functioning of equipment, and reports malfunctions and maintenance and repair requirements to the Shift Supervisor.
  • Completes and maintains related records and documentation such as recipes and records of resident preferences, allergies, and special dietary needs.
  • May demonstrate to residents the preparation of various food dishes as part of established individual and/or group rehabilitation plans.
  • Performs clerical duties such as answering the telephone; documenting food, fridge and dishwasher temperatures, and cleaning audits; and making diet labels.
  • Performs inventory control duties such as storing and rotating food and supplies
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

What you bring

Qualifications
  • Grade 12 plus one year recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Professional Cook Training Certificate
  • Certificate in Food Safe
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.

  • As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (The Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).
