Architectural Technologist or Building Drafter

Express Employment Professionals in Delta is looking for a quick-learning and detail-oriented Building Drafter or Architectural Technologist to join our client's design and drafting team as a full-time Building Technologist. This cross-trained team handles projects from initial concept design and estimating to permit-ready drawings and production preparation. They specialize in designing prefabricated homes and buildings using a wood-based building system, collaborating with both in-house manufacturing and third-party suppliers to provide complete packages up to the lock-up stage of construction.

Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
* Collaborate with the design team (building technology, architecture, and sales) throughout the design process.
* Participate in design meetings with clients and representatives alongside the sales lead.
* Attend weekly team meetings and daily design team discussions.
* Draft 2D and 3D building layouts and preliminary designs for client presentations based on provided sketches.
* Revise drawings in AutoCAD and SketchUp as needed.
* Ensure drawings meet drafting and design specifications, as well as local Building Code requirements.
* Prepare drawings and schedules for certified energy modeling (e.g., BC Step Code), structural engineering, permitting, and assembly.
* Create bills of materials and packing lists based on custom design specifications.
* Coordinate procurement of custom and stock materials as necessary.
* Communicate with suppliers regarding updated pricing, specifications, and lead times.
* Estimate costs based on rough designs and detailed drawings.
* Ensure project deadlines are met.
* Compile document packages.
* Manage design data within software systems.
* Update the database with as-built costs.

Skills and Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have many of the following qualifications:
* 1-4 years of relevant work experience.
* Completed a program in architecture technology, building science, or drafting.
* Hands-on construction experience is an advantage.
* Strong ability to learn new and existing computer programs quickly.
* Proficient in AutoCAD, SketchUp, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Acrobat.
* Excellent spatial perception and logical reasoning skills.
* Familiarity with metric measurements; knowledge of imperial and tsubo sizing is a plus.
* Practical understanding of BC Building Code (Part 9) is beneficial, although projects may be located across Canada or internationally.
* Positive attitude and a collaborative, solution-focused approach.
* Self-motivated with a strong work ethic.
* Strong English communication skills, both written and verbal.
* Organized, detail-oriented, and a proactive problem solver.
* Equivalent combinations of training and experience will also be considered (e.g., trades/building experience followed by a drafting program).
* Valid Class 5 driver's license.
